Talking Through Internships

Talking Through Internships

A partnership project connecting emerging creatives from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Kingston University through design work experience in London and Shanghai.

Talking Through Internships offers funded internships for ambitious Chinese and UK designers who want to work in either of two of the world’s most creative cities.

This website posts firsthand accounts of emerging designers and their experience of creative design practice in London and Shanghai and how to help build a new future of collaborative exchange between China and the UK.

For these accounts, please refer to the reports from each of the students on their own pages under the section menus years one, two and three, and read more in their blog posts.

Funded by the British Council China, Talking Through Internships offered a four-week opportunity for designers to work in the burgeoning creative industries of Shanghai and London. The programme addresses the need for more UK and Chinese design professionals with the cross-cultural skills needed for future success. Applicants across all disciplines were eligible to apply in their second year of study.

The Programme

Each student pays their own living expenses but is awarded economy return flights, accommodation, visa costs and a 4-week industry internship in Shanghai or London. Compliance with UK and Chinese Government rulings means that each intern is allowed temporary student status of the host university.

In return each student is required to submit a report, with images of the internship for the website. Each student has to present their Chinese experience to staff and students on their return and act as an ambassador for the project to potential internships donors and sponsors.

In 2018 students from both Kingston and Shanghai delivered their reports personally at an event staged at Bloomsbury Gallery on Wednesday 19 September. Copies of each of the students' reports can be downloaded in pdf format from their individual pages, accessible from the Year Three drop down menu above
